Spend any time in the fitness or recovery corners of the internet and you will run into BPC-157 — the "Wolverine peptide", credited with healing tendons, guts and just about everything in between. Regulators see it rather differently. In 2024 the TGA moved BPC-157 into Schedule 4 of the Poisons Standard, making it prescription-only in Australia, WADA bans it for athletes outright, and it has spent the past three years bouncing through the FDA's compounding rules in the US. What is BPC-157?
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic chain of 15 amino acids based on a fragment of a protective protein found in human gastric juice. It has been studied since the early 1990s, with most of the published work coming from a single research group in Zagreb, Croatia — and a large body of results from one lab, with limited independent replication, is a weaker foundation than the same evidence from many groups. Despite three decades of animal research, BPC-157 has never completed formal clinical development and is not an approved medicine in any country.
What the research actually shows
Animal studies: genuinely interesting, entirely preclinical
The animal literature is why anyone talks about BPC-157 at all. In rodent models it has been reported to speed healing of transected tendons, damaged ligaments, crushed muscle and bone defects, and to protect the gut against ulcers, fistulas and drug-induced injury — plausibly by promoting new blood-vessel formation, increasing growth-factor receptor expression and damping inflammatory signalling.
A 2025 systematic review in HSS Journal screened 544 articles published between 1993 and 2024 and found 36 that met inclusion criteria. Thirty-five of the 36 were preclinical — cell and animal studies — and across those models BPC-157 consistently improved functional, structural and biomechanical outcomes after musculoskeletal injury. That is a real signal in animals. It is not evidence the same happens in people: rodent models and doses do not translate directly, and most compounds that look good in animal healing studies never prove out in clinical trials.
The human evidence: one small chart review
The same review found exactly one clinical study: a 2021 retrospective chart review from a single US clinic covering 16 patients given BPC-157 injections for knee pain — no control group, no blinding, no randomisation. Of the 12 patients who received BPC-157 alone, seven reported relief lasting more than six months. More importantly, the reviewers found no clinical safety data at all, and there are no published randomised controlled trials of BPC-157 for any condition.

Why did BPC-157 become so popular?
The gap between evidence and popularity is mostly a story about distribution. The animal results are easy to describe in exciting terms on podcasts and social media, injury recovery is a problem nearly every athlete and gym-goer has, and for years the compound was cheap to buy online labelled "for research purposes only" — a framing that let sellers sidestep therapeutic-goods rules. Anecdotes accumulated, influencers repeated them, and the absence of human trials was rarely mentioned. None of that changed the underlying science: the case for BPC-157 in humans still rests on animal studies and testimonials.
The TGA's call: prescription-only in Australia
Australia is one of the first countries to deal with BPC-157 by name. Following an interim decision in early 2024, the TGA's delegate published a final decision on 22 May 2024 creating a new Schedule 4 (Prescription Only Medicine) entry for BPC-157 in the Poisons Standard, effective 1 June 2024.
The delegate's reasons are a neat summary of the problem: 48 importation referrals to the TGA in under two years, online marketing full of therapeutic claims, and a human safety and toxicity profile that is essentially undefined, with growing use outside medical supervision. Scheduling it alongside other performance- and image-enhancing substances was the response.
In practice, Schedule 4 means:
- BPC-157 can only lawfully be supplied in Australia with a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.
- There is no TGA-approved BPC-157 product, so any prescribing sits within the unapproved-medicines framework, at a doctor's discretion and responsibility.
- Importing or possessing it without a prescription can breach Commonwealth import rules and state and territory poisons legislation — "research use" labels on a website do not change that.
Scheduling is not an endorsement. The TGA has not assessed BPC-157 as safe or effective for anything; Schedule 4 simply puts a doctor between the public and a substance with no established human safety profile.
Banned in sport, shifting in the US
WADA: prohibited at all times
BPC-157 sits in category S0 (Non-Approved Substances) of the WADA Prohibited List — the catch-all for pharmacological substances not approved for human use by any health authority. WADA named it explicitly from its 2022 List onwards; S0 substances are banned at all times, in and out of competition. Sport Integrity Australia specifically warns athletes about BPC-157, including its appearance as an undeclared ingredient in some supplements. For any tested athlete, using it is a straightforward anti-doping violation.
The FDA: restriction, reversal, and an ongoing process
The US position has moved around. In late 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its bulk drug substances list — substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding — citing immunogenicity risks, impurity concerns and the lack of human safety data, which effectively barred US compounding pharmacies from making it. In April 2026 it was one of twelve peptides removed from Category 2 after its nomination was withdrawn, and in July 2026 the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted 8–6 to recommend allowing pharmacies to compound it — against the written advice of FDA's own scientific staff. That vote is advisory only: rulemaking is still to come, BPC-157 remains an unapproved drug in the US as everywhere else, and none of it changes the Australian Schedule 4 entry.
Where that leaves Australian readers
BPC-157 is a case study in how far ahead of the evidence a compound's reputation can run. The animal data are genuinely intriguing and may yet justify proper human trials; until those exist, nobody can say whether it heals anything in people, at what dose, or at what risk — and in Australia it is now prescription-only in any case.
