If you've browsed the serum shelf at an Australian pharmacy or beauty retailer lately, you've probably already met GHK-Cu without realising it. It's the ingredient behind those distinctive blue "copper peptide" serums, usually listed as copper tripeptide-1. Lately, though, GHK-Cu has picked up a second life in longevity and biohacking circles — this time as an injectable "research peptide". Same molecule, very different evidence base.

That gap is worth understanding. GHK-Cu has decades of genuine laboratory science behind it — but almost all of it supports one specific use, putting it on your skin, while the injectable version now flagged by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration has almost no human evidence at all. What GHK-Cu actually is

GHK is a tripeptide — just three amino acids: glycine, histidine and lysine — that occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine. It was first isolated from human plasma in 1973 by the biochemist Loren Pickart, who noticed that plasma from young donors made aged liver cells behave more youthfully. GHK binds copper(II) ions with high affinity, and the resulting complex, GHK-Cu, is the biologically active form most research focuses on.

Two things make it genuinely interesting. First, it's ours: GHK-Cu isn't a synthetic drug candidate but a molecule your body already makes, thought to act as a copper chaperone — shuttling copper safely to enzymes that need it, including lysyl oxidase (which cross-links collagen) and superoxide dismutase (an antioxidant enzyme).

Second, it declines with age. Published plasma measurements from Pickart's group put GHK at roughly 200 ng/mL at age 20, falling to around 80 ng/mL by age 60 — a drop of about 60 per cent. That decline tracks with slower wound healing and thinner skin, though correlation isn't causation, and nobody has shown that restoring blood levels reverses anything.

The topical evidence: genuinely interesting, with caveats

The dermatology story is where GHK-Cu earns its reputation. In laboratory and animal studies, it stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans, promotes blood-vessel formation, and accelerates wound healing — effects reported across rats, mice, rabbits and pigs, including diabetic and ischaemic wound models. A widely cited gene-profiling analysis suggested GHK modulates the expression of several thousand human genes, many in a direction consistent with tissue repair — an intriguing finding, though it comes from cells in a dish, not people.

Human data exist too, mostly from cosmetic-industry studies. The best known followed 67 women aged 50–59 with photodamaged skin who applied a GHK-Cu facial cream for 12 weeks. It reported improvements in skin laxity, clarity, fine lines and skin density, with the peptide well tolerated. Similar industry trials found increased skin thickness and reduced wrinkle depth versus placebo or vitamin C creams.

The honest caveats: these studies were small, largely industry-funded, and several were published as conference presentations or book chapters rather than peer-reviewed journal papers. GHK-Cu also penetrates intact skin poorly — one permeability study measured under 4 per cent getting through. So topical GHK-Cu is a reasonable, low-risk cosmetic ingredient with more supporting science than most — but it isn't a proven treatment for anything, and it hasn't been tested head-to-head against retinoids, the benchmark evidence-based topical for skin ageing.

Hair growth: mostly preclinical

"Copper peptides for hair loss" is one of the most-searched claims attached to GHK-Cu, and it's where the evidence thins out considerably. The biology is plausible: copper peptides enlarged hair follicles in rodent studies from the early 1990s, and a related copper-peptide analogue was taken into US Phase 2 clinical trials for hair loss — but development stopped there, and it was never approved as a drug (it was later sold as a cosmetic instead).

What's missing is the thing that matters: large, randomised, peer-reviewed human trials showing copper peptides regrow hair in people with androgenetic alopecia. Minoxidil and finasteride have that evidence; GHK-Cu doesn't. Claims online that copper peptides "outperform minoxidil" trace back to small, mostly vendor-promoted studies rather than robust trials.

Injectable GHK-Cu: where the evidence runs out

Injectable GHK-Cu is now marketed in longevity circles for "systemic regeneration". The published human evidence for injecting it is close to non-existent: no registered efficacy trials, no dosing studies, no long-term safety data. Everything supporting systemic use is preclinical — and a molecule that stimulates blood-vessel growth and broad gene expression is exactly the kind of thing you'd want properly studied before injecting it regularly.

The regulatory picture in Australia

Australia draws a sharp line through the middle of the GHK-Cu market.

Topical cosmetic use is legal and widespread. Copper tripeptide-1 in a serum or cream is regulated as a cosmetic ingredient, not a medicine, provided the product makes no therapeutic claims. That's why you can buy copper peptide serums freely at Australian retailers.

Injectable GHK-Cu is a different story. Any injectable is a therapeutic good by definition, and no injectable GHK-Cu product is approved on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. In its April 2026 safety alert, the TGA named GHK-Cu explicitly — alongside BPC-157, TB-500 and retatrutide — as an example of unapproved peptide products often supplied in injectable form, warning that these products haven't been assessed for safety, quality or effectiveness, and that it has received reports of severe allergic reactions to unapproved peptides. The TGA has since made unregulated peptides a compliance priority. Compounding pharmacies can legally prepare some peptides for an individual patient on prescription, but that pathway is narrow — and the grey-market vials sold online sit well outside it, with no verification of sterility, dose or even contents.

GHK-Cu is a rare case in the peptide world: a naturally occurring molecule with real, decades-deep science — but that science overwhelmingly supports modest cosmetic use on skin, not injections.
