TGA-approved medicine (Schedule 4)

The benchmark the rest of this space is measured against: recombinant human growth hormone is a fully approved, PBS-subsidised medicine in Australia for defined conditions — and simultaneously one of the most misused compounds in anti-aging and bodybuilding circles.

At a glance

  • Decades of evidence for genuine growth hormone deficiency
  • PBS-subsidised in Australia under specialist criteria
  • Anti-aging trials: modest body-composition change, real side effects
  • WADA-prohibited and border-controlled in Australia

How it works

HGH stimulates growth and cell reproduction largely via IGF-1, driving childhood growth and influencing muscle, bone and fat metabolism throughout life. Pharmaceutical somatropin replaces the hormone in people whose pituitary doesn't produce enough.

What the research shows

For approved uses — paediatric and adult growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome and other defined conditions — the evidence is extensive and decades deep. For anti-aging in healthy adults, trials show modest body-composition changes with real side effects (fluid retention, joint pain, insulin resistance) and no demonstrated longevity benefit.

Regulatory status

Australia

TGA-approved and PBS-subsidised for specific conditions under specialist criteria. It is Schedule 4 (prescription-only) and a border-controlled import — possession without a prescription is illegal.

Worldwide

Approved by the FDA, EMA and regulators worldwide for defined indications. Prescribing it for anti-aging is unlawful in the US. Prohibited in sport by WADA.
