Peptides · Growth Hormone Axis
Tesamorelin
Egrifta · TH9507
FDA-approved (US) · not registered in Australia
A stabilised analogue of growth-hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) and one of the few compounds on this list that is a genuinely approved medicine — the FDA approved it to reduce excess abdominal fat in people with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
At a glance
- FDA-approved for HIV-associated lipodystrophy since 2010
- Reduced visceral fat ~15–18% in phase 3 trials
- Being studied in liver fat and cognitive research
- No ARTG registration — not available as a medicine in Australia
How it works
Tesamorelin stimulates the pituitary to release the body's own growth hormone in a more physiological pattern than injected HGH, raising IGF-1 and preferentially reducing visceral (deep abdominal) fat.
What the research shows
Phase 3 trials in HIV-associated lipodystrophy showed roughly 15–18% reductions in visceral fat over 6–12 months. Research interest continues in other conditions, including NAFLD and cognition, but its approval remains narrow.
Regulatory status
Australia
Not registered on the ARTG — there is no approved tesamorelin product in Australia. Any access would require special-access pathways through a prescriber.
Worldwide
FDA-approved since 2010 for HIV-associated lipodystrophy (marketed as Egrifta). Not broadly approved for fat loss in the general population. WADA prohibits GHRH analogues in sport.
