Most of what circulates online about epithalon (also spelled epitalon) compresses into one sentence: it switches telomerase back on and lengthens your telomeres. The 2025 independent replication from Brunel University London is usually cited as proof. But read the paper's own title and a different, more awkward story appears — the telomere lengthening may not have been telomerase at all. This post looks at what "ALT activity" means, why it matters, and what epithalon research does and doesn't support for Australian readers.
What is epithalon, and what was actually tested?
Epithalon is a synthetic four-amino-acid peptide (alanine-glutamic acid-aspartic acid-glycine, or AEDG). It was developed in Vladimir Khavinson's laboratory at the St Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology as a simplified analogue of the bovine pineal extract Epithalamin — and those two are not interchangeable, despite being used as synonyms in marketing copy. Epithalamin is an animal-derived extract; epithalon is a defined synthetic sequence.
For roughly two decades the evidence base was essentially one research group. That changed in 2025. A team from the Centre for Genome Engineering and Maintenance at Brunel University London published work in Biogerontology under a title that deserves to be read slowly: "Epitalon increases telomere length in human cell lines through telomerase upregulation or ALT activity."
That "or" is the whole story.
The mechanism question: telomerase, or ALT?
The paper's framing notes that epitalon's reputed anti-ageing effect is attributed to induction of telomerase enzyme activity, and that quantitative data on the pathway — hTERT mRNA expression, telomerase enzyme activity, and ALT activation — had not been extensively studied across different cell types. So the group measured all of them.
What ALT is
ALT stands for Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres: a recombination-based mechanism some cells use to maintain telomeres without telomerase. It is not a neutral curiosity. ALT is a hallmark of a subset of human cancers, which is precisely why "telomeres got longer" is not automatically good news at the cellular level.
What was in the dish
The experiments treated the breast cancer cell lines 21NT and BT474 alongside normal epithelial and fibroblast cells with epitalon, then extracted DNA, RNA and protein. Cancer lines were exposed for four days across 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 µg/mL, while normal fibroblast (IBR.3) and mammary epithelial (HMEC) cells were treated with 1 µg/mL for three weeks, with untreated cells as controls. Telomerase readouts were run as paired hTERT expression and enzyme activity measurements, with the PC3 line included as a positive control for telomerase activity.
Two things follow. First, the design is a well-controlled cell-culture study, not a human trial — nobody was dosed. Second, the fact that breast cancer lines were among the responders is an open question, not a footnote, and it is the reason this replication should make enthusiasts more careful rather than less.
A correction worth knowing about
In November 2025 the authors published a correction in Biogerontology stating that the wrong figures had appeared in Figures 1, 2 and 3, with corrected versions supplied. That is a figure-handling error, not a retraction, and the corrected record is public — but if you are citing this study, cite the corrected version. It is also a useful reminder that a single paper, however independent, is a starting point.
Myth versus evidence: three claims worth downgrading
"Epithalon reverses ageing." Nothing in the 2025 work speaks to organismal ageing. It measured telomere length and telomerase readouts in cultured human cells. The available summary of the evidence is that epitalon has been shown to activate telomerase and elongate telomeres in human cell cultures — including the 2025 Brunel replication — and that whether this translates to telomerase activation in living human tissues has not been established.
"It's proven in humans." It is not approved as a medicine anywhere, and it is not FDA-approved for any use in humans. The older human-facing literature comes overwhelmingly from one Russian group, much of it published in Russian-language journals, small, and not independently replicated in the modern sense.
"Longer telomeres are always better." The ALT finding is the counter-argument, in the study's own title.
Is epithalon legal in Australia?
Australia has no approved epithalon product. Nothing containing it appears on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, so it cannot be lawfully supplied here as a medicine, and no Australian clinical guideline supports its use.
Scheduling is where people get confused. The general position for research peptides in Australia is that almost all sit as Schedule 4 prescription medicines, meaning a doctor's script is required for human use, and supplying or administering Schedule 4 substances without authorisation is an offence under each state's Poisons Act. You will see epithalon described online as "unscheduled" and therefore freely available — treat that claim sceptically, because scheduling is only half the question. A substance presented for a therapeutic purpose is a therapeutic good regardless of how a website labels it, and importation is enforced: the TGA has issued infringement notices to individuals for unlawful importation of peptides without the necessary approvals, including a $3,756 fine to a person in Victoria.
Athletes should assume no safe harbour. Substances with no approval for human therapeutic use fall foul of anti-doping rules covering non-approved agents, and "it was unscheduled" is not a defence.

What would actually move this forward
Three things, in order: independent replication of the ALT versus telomerase split in more cell types; animal work with hard endpoints rather than biomarkers; and a registered, sponsored human trial with a named institution. On that last point, be careful with trial registries — placeholder and demonstration records for fashionable peptides do circulate, and a "recruiting" listing means nothing unless the sponsor is a real, verifiable organisation.
